Hand-weaving Nepal Carpet
- Nepal Rugs

Every year, the Nepalese carpet is reaching new frontiers of market and thus to its vast admirers. Being completely hand-wooven with a fine blend of long-staple quality wool imported from Newzeland and Tibet, the Nepalese carpet is more of a piece of art than just a home décor. The ancestral craft of making rugs in Nepal follows the renowned Tibetan style and hence is the most desirable of a multitude of carpets being circulated in the international market. Hand-knotted Nepalese carpet is differs from the sharp-coloured machine-made varieties produced elsewhere. Ever since carpet manufacturing gathered momentum in the country with special attention given to quality design and finer production, a marked change has taken place in the very production process. And certainly, with the wide use of modern technology, the carpet production process too has seen new and definitely more efficient weaving techniques.
The basic raw material for these rugs is raw wool. Because of lack of local wool for the production of quality carpets, Nepalese manufacturers are dependent on imported wool to meet 75% of their requirement. The imported wool comes mostly from Tibet. But with the irregular supply and long delays in delivery of Tibetan wool, Nepal Rugs manufacturer have turned to New Zealand for long-staple pre-washed wool too.
The Tibetan wool comes usually in a very raw from, that is with dirt, grease and vegetable matter. Most of these wools are 95% white wool and are black, brown, blue and grey in colours. This quality wool comes from the flocks of sheep raised in the high Himalayan plateau where the climatic conditions are severely cold. The Tibetan wool obtained by importers and some manufaturers is washed either in streams or with the help of chemicals and detergents at the factories. The detergent chemicals are imported from Switzerland and India and the process removes dirt, sea mud, grease, vegetable matter, urine, perspiration, etc from the wool. After washing, different types of wool are sorted out according the their colours.
The process of blending is done either manually by hand-carding equipment or by machine. Carding is a process in which fibers are opened and separated and each fiber is set in a straight and parallel position. In an effective carding no fiber is intermingled with another, IN this process dirt, vegetable matter and short fibers are removed. This process also helps achieve better blending.
Spinning is a traditional skill of the Nepali people. They spin holy thread and lighting thread from the cotton sliver imported from India. The wool carding by hand is not an easy job. The spinning process draws and twists the wool fibers making yarns of desired thickness. The Dyeing of the wool can be done either by chemical or by vegetable dye. There are three types of chemical dyes such as acid dye, metal complex dye and chrome dye. The metal complex dye is popular in Nepal for its fastness property. Its fastness is tenable to sunlight, chemical washing and rubbing which is important for carpet wool. The metal complex dye is almost similar to chrome dye. The chrome dyeing process is comparatively slower and consumes more fuel for proper shading. That's why complex dye is more popular in Nepal than in other countries.
Nepal carpets are woven on a vertical loom. The loom may be of wood or iron and consists of two vertical poles which are fixed by a horizontal base to keep the loom rigid. In the upper and lower portion of the loom are placed two movable horizontal wooden beams upon which the cotton warps are tied in the form of endless chain. When the carpet is woven to a certain height, the tension is released and the woven part is pushed downward and the unwoven part is moved upward from behind the loom. This process is repeated with rotation in the same direction till the weaving is finished.
Nepal carpets are woven in the Tibetan knotting system. In this system the woolen yarn is tied with two warp threads at different positions with the help of a weaving rod. This process is continued breadth-wise from left to right. The cotton weft is then inserted in between the warp thread alternatively. Then it is beaten with an iron hammer and the wool around the iron rod is cut with the pile-cutting blade and thus the woolen pile is formed. In this way the whole length of the carpet is woven in due course of time. After the carpet is completed and removed from the loom, it is clipped and the designs are cut in physical relief according to the buyer's demands.
Technically, most modern carpets are extremely well made and finished-probably as well as they ever have been. The standards of composition of the design are not always so high. The best carpets are almost up to the standard of the better old ones, but often the design is clumsily drawn and awkwardly laid out. Contouring is sometimes exaggerated far beyond its original function of delicatedly sharpening the lines of junction between colours. Nepal Rugs have its beauty.

In Tibetan rugs, there are floor rugs (very rare), sleeping rugs (very common), prayer mats, runners, saddle rugs, chair rugs, column rugs, door rugs, and small pillow rugs, There are even a few types made for animal uses.
